“I am delighted at my appointment as the Executive Director of the Guild of Health. The Guild has a distinguished history of service for over one hundred years in the Christian healing ministry and I am looking forward to making a contribution to our role in this important area of our gospel ministry and mission.”

Peter’s professional background is largely in education. For more than thirty years he was a teacher and head teacher in primary schools in Cornwall. For a further six years he worked as a senior local authority education officer in Cornwall in charge of staff wellbeing and head teacher pastoral care. For the last two years Peter was head of a centre providing services of faith, spirituality, health and wellbeing for students and staff at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

Peter’s academic studies are primarily concerned with the development of spirituality. His Bachelor’s degree explored the formation of spiritual concepts in young children whilst his Master’s degree examined the identification of the spiritual client in multi-disciplinary contexts and his doctoral thesis was a research into the definition and development of spirituality in education. Peter has written a variety of articles on these subjects and his work was the springboard for the development of the Spiritual Health Index. Peter has also lectured and written on leadership and management with particular reference to Christian contexts. Peter has been asked by the Guild Council to review processes and structures and to make recommendations in the spring of 2012. He invites any contributions and his contact details are on the Guild contact web-page.
“I am concerned that the gospel we preach should not only be our aspiration for the way we live but should also be our framework for the way we conduct our working lives. The message of the Guild will not only be in what we say but how we are with one another and how our Guild conducts its business. At a time when companies are looking to cut costs the Guild Council has taken an important step in its development by investing some of its resources in an Executive Director to lead the next phase of development. My work will be to affirm those structures and roles that are core to our business and to build further in areas where the Guild wishes to grow.”

Peter was ordained in 2000 to the Anglican priesthood as a Minister in Secular Employment in the diocese of Truro in Cornwall. Since then his ministry has focussed on spiritual, health and wellbeing in a variety of contexts including the church, the workplace and in recreation. Peter has worked with the Trades’ Union Congress in the south west promoting healthy home-work-life balance; with the diocese of Truro identifying clergy stress and with retreat centres exploring spiritual health in organisations and through prayer.

“The Guild’s message of Christian wholeness through relationship with God and one another is of great importance particularly at this moment in time. We know that the glory of humanity is in relationship with God and that wholeness comes from that relationship. Our ministry is to help others hear and understand this truth. The full scope of individual and community health and wellbeing is a popular quest in which the Guild can play a significant role.”
